Democracy Cannot Breathe When Dissent Is Bulldozed

The recent demolition of a journalist’s house in Jammu has once again raised a disturbing question: Is this how a democracy responds to criticism? Punishment without due process is not justice it is intimidation. And when those who speak truth to power are targeted, the entire democratic fabric weakens.

In the midst of this, a heart touching gesture emerged: a Hindu family stepped forward to offer land to the displaced journalist. At a time when fear, polarisation and mistrust are being weaponised, this act reminds us of a fundamental truth Humanity is stronger than hate. Indian citizens, regardless of religion or region, simply want to live in peace.

Today, however, we see two Indias.
On one side, a system that appears to selectively target certain communities, punishing people without a transparent or fair process.
On the other, citizens from all communities who refuse to let hatred define this country people who stand with the oppressed, who offer support, who believe that peace is the only way forward.

India’s democracy rests on four pillars, and Journalism is one of the strongest among them. It exists to question the government, expose wrongdoing and safeguard the rights of ordinary people. When journalists are silenced or punished through Fear tactics, Bulldozer actions or Fabricated charges it is not just an individual who suffers it is the entire nation’s voice that gets suppressed.

A democracy cannot thrive when dissent is destroyed instead of debated.
A democracy cannot survive when institutions operate like enforcers instead of protectors.
And a democracy cannot be proud if citizens must rely on humanitarian gestures to correct injustices created by the state.

What happened in Jammu is not just an isolated incident. It is a warning.
A reminder that if we do not defend the freedom of the press today, Tomorrow no citizen will be safe from arbitrary power.

In these difficult times, the true strength of India lies not in bulldozers, not in fear, but in its people those who still choose compassion over division and humanity over hatred. The gesture of that one family shows us the path we must choose.

For India to remain a true democracy it must protect journalists, uphold due process, and ensure that no citizen is punished without law.
Our democracy must not just exist It must feel alive, Fair and Fearless.
