Telangana High Court Refuses to Halt Panchayat Elections Seeks State’s Reply on Sub Category Reservations

The Telangana High Court on Saturday declined to stay the ongoing Panchayat election process  despite petitions challenging the state’s sub category reservation system in local bodies.

A division bench heard the pleas that questioned the manner in which the government allocated reservations to SC, ST, and BC sub groups. The petitioners argued that the categorisation was arbitrary and demanded that the elections be paused until the issue was resolved.

The court  however  refused to interfere with the election schedule  stating that halting the process at this stage would disrupt grassroots governance. Instead  it directed the Telangana government to File a Detailed Counter Affidavit within Six Weeks explaining the rationale behind the sub category reservations.

The bench further posted the matter for Next Hearing in Eight weeks when the court will review the state’s response and the legality of the reservation system.

The High Court noted that allowing the elections to continue will not affect the final outcome of the case and any issues identified later can be addressed through appropriate legal remedies
