In a major step toward transforming Hyderabad into a fully modernised metropolitan hub, the Telangana Cabinet has approved a city wide project to shift all overhead electricity lines, T-Fibre internet networks and cable TV connections underground. The initiative will cover the entire Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limits.
The underground multi utility network will combine power lines, fibre optic cables and communication systems within a single protected corridor beneath the city’s roads. Officials say the project will drastically reduce power outages, improve safety, prevent cable mishaps during rains and beautify city roads currently cluttered with hanging wires.
City to be Divided into Three Circles
To effectively implement the massive infrastructure plan, Hyderabad will be divided into Three electricity circles, each responsible for executing the underground cabling work within its zone. The government will jointly coordinate the execution with electricity distribution companies, T-Fibre authorities and private network providers.
Estimated Cost: ₹14,725 Crore
The estimated cost for building the underground network across the city is ₹14,725 crore, making it one of the largest urban power infrastructure upgrades in the country. A detailed working plan has been ordered for phased execution, including road cutting permissions, traffic management and coordination between agencies.
What the Government Aims to Achieve
According to officials, underground utility corridors will:
- Reduce frequent power failures and cable damages
- Minimise maintenance issues during monsoon storms
- Eliminate visual pollution caused by hanging wires and poles
- Improve overall urban planning and road safety
- Support future smart city services
GHMC Set to Expand With Merger of 27 Urban Bodies
Along with this project, the Cabinet also approved the merger of 27 Urban Local Bodies located within the Outer Ring Road into GHMC. The expansion aims to bring uniform civic services, better planning and integrated infrastructure systems under a single metropolitan administration.
Third Power Distribution Company Announced
The Cabinet has also sanctioned the creation of a Third power distribution company (DISCOM) in Telangana. It will focus on agriculture supply, drinking water projects and public utilities, while distributing load and responsibilities currently handled by two DISCOMs.
What Happens Next?
The government has directed technical departments to prepare the detailed execution roadmap. While no timeline has been officially announced, officials confirmed that the work will be carried out in phases due to the scale of investment and the need to minimise disruption to traffic and businesses.
