Fortis Healthcare Plans Major Expansion of Obesity Clinics Amid Weight Loss Therapy Surge

Fortis Healthcare is set to open more dedicated obesity clinics across its hospital network in response to rising demand for weight loss therapies. The CEO, Ashutosh Raghuvanshi, said that drug launches like Eli Lilly’s Mounjaro and Novo Nordisk’s Wegovy have awakened patient awareness, pushing Fortis to scale up obesity management care across multiple states.

What’s Changing & Where

  • As of now, Fortis has 5 fully operational obesity clinics located in Delhi, Gurgaon, Mumbai, and Bengaluru.
  • The plan is to add 13 more clinics within a year, in states including Punjab, Rajasthan, Karnataka, Maharashtra, West Bengal, and Haryana.
  • Alongside clinics, Fortis is preparing a ₹7 billion investment over four years to expand its hospital capacity, especially in Bengaluru, Mumbai, the NCR (National Capital Region), and Punjab.

Services & Structure

  • Each clinic will offer a multidisciplinary set up: endocrinologists, weight loss surgeons, nutritionists, dietitians, and psychologists. Care will be customised based on patients’ health profile and therapy needs.
  • The clinics will provide structured programs combining medication, lifestyle changes, counselling, and surgical interventions where necessary. Fortis will also use diagnostics and follow ups to monitor long-term outcomes.

Why This Growth

  • Obesity rates in India are climbing rapidly. Analysts predict India could become the second largest country in terms of obese population by 2050.
  • The obesity drug market has grown approximately fivefold since 2021, driven by new drug approvals, greater awareness, and patient willingness to try medical weight-loss options.
  • Fortis sees strong revenue growth potential. The better structured obesity clinics meet both a health need and a growing market opportunity.

What to Watch

  • How the rollout of these new clinics plays out whether Fortis can maintain high quality across locations.
  • The cost and accessibility of these therapies for average patients, especially in non-metro areas.
  • How insurance coverage and government healthcare policies respond whether obesity management becomes more covered or regulated.
  • The introduction of generic versions of major drugs, which could lower cost for many.
