West Bengal in Turmoil After Historic BJP Victory, Violence & Political Tensions Rise

West Bengal Historic BJP Victory

West Bengal is witnessing intense political developments and rising tensions after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured a historic victory in the 2026 Assembly elections, ending the long rule of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) led by Mamata Banerjee.

Following the election results, Governor R. N. Ravi officially dissolved the state assembly, clearing the way for the formation of West Bengal’s first BJP-led government. BJP leaders have started discussions over cabinet formation and the selection of the next chief minister.

However, Mamata Banerjee refused to accept the defeat, alleging irregularities in the election process. She stated that she would not resign immediately and signaled that the TMC could challenge the results through political and legal means. Her remarks have further intensified the political atmosphere in the state.

Meanwhile, several parts of West Bengal have witnessed post-poll violence and unrest. Clashes, vandalism, arson and political attacks were reported from multiple districts after the results were announced. Authorities have reportedly arrested hundreds of people as security forces continue monitoring sensitive areas.

Tensions also increased after a BJP worker linked to senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari was shot dead amid the ongoing unrest. The incident has triggered sharp reactions from BJP leaders, who accused rival political groups of targeting party workers after the election outcome.

In Kolkata and some minority dominated localities, reports of bike borne groups creating panic and fear added to public anxiety. Police presence has been increased in several sensitive areas to prevent further violence.

Despite the political turmoil, normal government processes continue, with the West Bengal Board expected to announce the Madhyamik (Class 10) examination results soon.

The dramatic election outcome marks one of the biggest political shifts in West Bengal in decades, with the state now entering a highly sensitive transition period amid security concerns and political uncertainty.
