Widespread protests and shutdowns have brought normal life to a standstill across Manipur, following the tragic killing of two young children in a bomb blast earlier this month. The incident has sparked public outrage, with demonstrations continuing to intensify across the state.
Incident that triggered unrest
The violence stems from a bomb explosion on April 7 in Bishnupur district, where a 5 year old boy and a 5 month old infant lost their lives. Their mother was also seriously injured. The attack shocked residents and reignited anger over ongoing security concerns in the region.
Statewide shutdown and protests
Civil society groups called for a multi day shutdown, leading to the closure of markets, schools, and transport services across valley districts. Protesters have taken to the streets demanding:
- Immediate arrest of those responsible
- Stronger security measures
- Justice for the victims
Torch rallies and public demonstrations have been held in several areas, especially in the capital, Imphal.
Clashes and curfew
Tensions escalated as protesters clashed with security forces during rallies. Authorities responded with tear gas and arrests after crowds defied restrictions.
A curfew from 5 PM to 5 AM has been imposed in multiple districts to control the situation, while security presence has been significantly increased.
Spreading unrest
The situation has been further complicated by parallel shutdown calls from other groups, adding to disruptions. Reports of solidarity protests have also emerged from neighboring regions, indicating growing concern beyond the state.
Background tensions
The unrest comes amid ongoing ethnic and security tensions in Manipur since 2023, which have already led to prolonged instability, displacement, and repeated outbreaks of violence.
Current situation
As of today, normal life remains severely affected, with protests continuing despite curfew measures. Authorities face mounting pressure to restore order and ensure swift justice, while residents remain on edge amid fears of further escalation.
