Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) Working President K. T. Rama Rao (KTR) has criticised the Congress government in Telangana, alleging that it has failed to honour its election promise to protect assigned lands and the rights of beneficiaries.
Speaking at a public meeting and later posting on social media, KTR claimed that the Congress had assured voters before the Assembly elections that assigned landholders would receive full protection and ownership rights. He alleged that the government’s recent actions contradict those commitments.
What Are Assigned Lands?
Assigned lands are government owned lands allotted to landless and economically weaker families, mainly for agriculture and livelihood purposes. These lands are generally subject to restrictions on sale or transfer to ensure they remain with the original beneficiaries.
The issue has long been politically sensitive in Telangana, particularly in rural areas where thousands of families depend on assigned lands for their income.
KTR’s Allegations
KTR accused the Congress government of creating uncertainty for beneficiaries by pursuing policies that, according to him, could affect the rights of those holding assigned lands.
He questioned why the government was allegedly moving away from its pre-election assurances and demanded that it clearly explain its position to farmers and beneficiaries.
The BRS leader also alleged that the Congress had made promises during the election campaign that it was now failing to implement.
Congress Government’s Stand
The Congress government has maintained that its policies are aimed at balancing development needs with the protection of legitimate landholders rights.
Government leaders have stated that any decisions involving assigned lands will be taken in accordance with existing laws and after considering the interests of affected families. The administration has rejected opposition claims that it intends to deprive genuine beneficiaries of their rights.
Political Debate Intensifies
The issue has become a major point of political confrontation between the ruling Congress and the opposition BRS.
While the BRS accuses the government of breaking an election promise, the Congress says the opposition is attempting to politicise a complex land policy issue.
The debate is expected to continue as land rights remain one of Telangana’s most significant political and social concerns, with both parties seeking to reassure beneficiaries about the future of assigned lands.
