India on 2 June 2026 strongly rejected references to Jammu & Kashmir made in a joint statement issued after the European Union (EU)-Pakistan Strategic Dialogue held in Islamabad. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) described the remarks as “Unwarranted” and reiterated that Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh are integral parts of India.
What Triggered the Response?
The controversy arose after a joint EU-Pakistan communiqué stated that Pakistan had briefed the EU on the Jammu & Kashmir issue and that both sides supported the peaceful resolution of conflicts through dialogue and diplomacy in accordance with the UN Charter.
India’s Reaction
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said India “Categorically rejects” such references, emphasizing that Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh are “Integral and inalienable parts of India.”
He stated that individuals or entities with “No locus standi” should refrain from commenting on India’s internal affairs.
Concerns Over Terrorism
India also questioned why the EU-Pakistan statement did not adequately address the issue of cross border terrorism. Indian officials argued that terrorism remains a major concern in the region and should not be overlooked in international discussions involving Pakistan.
Not the First Such Protest
This is the second time in recent weeks that India has objected to foreign references to Jammu & Kashmir. In May, New Delhi similarly rejected references to a joint statement issued by China and Pakistan, maintaining that no third party has the right to comment on the matter.
