AIMIM national spokesperson Syed Asim Waqar is reportedly planning to join the Congress party. He is expected to join Congress in Delhi on September 2.

However, Waqar has not officially confirmed that he is leaving AIMIM or joining Congress.

Who is Asim Waqar?

  • Asim Waqar has been associated with the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) for nearly 10 years. He is a well known party spokesperson and has regularly appeared in television debates and political programmes.
  • Before joining AIMIM, Waqar was associated with the Samajwadi Party for around 20 years.

Why may he leave AIMIM?

  • Reports suggest that Waqar has differences with some decisions taken by the AIMIM leadership, particularly regarding the party’s activities in Uttar Pradesh.
  • Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Imran Pratapgarhi is also reported to have played a role in talks with Waqar.
  • The exact reason for the reported move has not been officially explained by Waqar.

Why is this important?

  • The possible move comes ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.
  • AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi has been trying to expand the party’s presence in Uttar Pradesh. Waqar has been one of AIMIM’s prominent public faces in the state.
  • If he joins Congress, it could be a political setback for AIMIM in Uttar Pradesh.

What happens next?

Waqar is reportedly expected to join Congress on September 2. Until an official announcement is made, the move should be treated as a reported development rather than a confirmed decision.
