The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday announced a revamped national team under party president Nitin Nabin, bringing several new faces and experienced leaders into key organisational positions. However, the absence of any leader from Telangana has emerged as one of the notable aspects of the reshuffle.
According to reports, Telangana is the only southern state that has not secured representation in the newly announced national office bearer team. Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh have received representation, making Telangana’s exclusion particularly significant for the state unit.
Three Telangana leaders dropped
The reshuffle effectively removes the previous national level presence of Telangana leaders from the BJP’s top organisational structure. Reports indicate that the changes affect leaders who previously held important national responsibilities, leaving the state without representation in the new national office bearer structure.
The development comes despite the BJP’s strong electoral performance in Telangana in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The party won eight of the state’s 17 parliamentary constituencies, significantly expanding its footprint in Telangana. Two of its Telangana MPs were also inducted into the Union Council of Ministers.
Why the decision matters
The omission has generated discussion within Telangana BJP circles because the party has been seeking to consolidate its position in the state after its strong performance in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.
The absence of a Telangana representative at the national organisational level could raise questions about the state’s role in the BJP’s future national strategy. It could also affect the political visibility of Telangana leaders within the party and fuel debate over the next phase of organisational expansion.
At the same time, the reshuffle should not automatically be interpreted as a reduction in the BJP’s importance to Telangana. The party has retained a substantial political presence in the state and national organisational appointments are only one part of its overall structure.
Major changes in BJP national team
The new team includes 13 national vice presidents and eight national general secretaries. Former Union minister Smriti Irani has been appointed a national general secretary, while Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has been appointed national treasurer.
The BJP has also made significant changes to its digital organisation. Deepak Mhaske has been appointed to head the party’s social media operations, replacing Amit Malviya, who had held the position for around 11 years.
The party has described the appointments as a broad based organisational exercise, with leaders from 23 states and Union territories represented and 10 women and six leaders from minority communities included in the new team.
Political significance for Telangana
For Telangana BJP leaders, the immediate challenge will be to maintain organisational momentum and strengthen the party’s grassroots network despite the absence of a state leader in the new national office bearer team.
The BJP’s eight Lok Sabha seats in Telangana demonstrate that the party has established a significant electoral base in the state. Whether the latest organisational reshuffle has any long term impact on that growth will become clearer as the party prepares for future electoral battles.
For now, Telangana’s exclusion from the BJP’s new national team has become an important talking point in the state’s political circles.
