Around 5.82 lakh voters, accounting for 20.80% of the electorate across Hyderabad district’s 15 Assembly constituencies, are likely to receive notices as part of the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
The voters had submitted Enumeration Forms during the enumeration phase, but their present details could not be mapped or linked with corresponding entries in the electoral rolls prepared during the previous SIR in 2002.
Hyderabad district election authorities will now begin a verification process to establish the eligibility of these voters to remain on the electoral rolls.
What does “Unmapped voter” mean?
- An unmapped voter is not necessarily an ineligible voter.
- It simply means that election officials could not establish a link between the voter’s current electoral details and the corresponding entry in the 2002 electoral roll.
- Officials have clarified that failure to map a voter’s details does not automatically result in deletion of the person’s name from the electoral roll.
- The affected voters will be given an opportunity to submit documents and establish their eligibility.
Notices and hearings
- Hyderabad District Election Officer and GHMC Commissioner RV Karnan said notices would be issued to voters whose current details could not be linked with the 2002 SIR rolls.
- Election authorities will examine the documents submitted by voters and verify details such as their place of residence and whereabouts during the period covered by the previous SIR.
- The verification process may also include hearings, where voters could be asked to provide supporting documents and explain their electoral history.
Secunderabad Cantonment has highest number
Among Hyderabad’s 15 Assembly constituencies, Secunderabad Cantonment recorded the highest number of unmapped voters, with nearly 66,450.
Other constituencies with large numbers of unmapped voters include:
- Jubilee Hills: 63,448
- Musheerabad: 58,320
- Secunderabad: 47,180
- Amberpet: 47,100
- Sanathnagar: 43,340
- Karwan: 40,700
How many voters were successfully mapped?
- According to the available figures, around 7.98 lakh voters, or 28.5%, were self mapped.
- Another 14.14 lakh voters, accounting for 50.5%, were mapped through progeny or family link details.
- The remaining 5.82 lakh records require further verification.
Important clarification for Hyderabad voters
- Receiving an SIR notice does not mean that a voter’s name has already been deleted.
- The notice is part of the verification process. Affected voters will have an opportunity to provide documents and establish their eligibility.
- Election authorities will make the final determination after examining the available records and the information submitted by voters.
Why this matters
The SIR exercise is intended to update electoral rolls and identify discrepancies in voter records.
For Hyderabad, the large number of unmapped voters makes the verification process particularly important. The outcome could influence the city’s electoral rolls, but the 5.82 lakh figure should not be described as confirmed deletions.
