Himanta Biswa Sarma was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Assam for a second consecutive term on Tuesday after the BJP-led NDA alliance secured a strong victory in the 2026 Assam Assembly elections.
The grand oath taking ceremony was held at the Veterinary College Ground in Khanapara, Guwahati, where Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya administered the oath of office and secrecy to Himanta Biswa Sarma and members of his new cabinet.
The event turned into a major political gathering with the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and several senior BJP and NDA leaders from across the country.
Along with Sarma, four MLAs also took oath as ministers in the new cabinet. BJP leaders Rameswar Teli and Ajanta Neog, AGP leader Atul Bora, and BPF leader Charan Boro were among those inducted into the ministry. The NDA alliance said the cabinet would be expanded further in the coming days.
The BJP-led NDA returned to power in Assam with a comfortable majority in the Assembly elections. According to election results, the BJP alone crossed the majority mark, while allies Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) also contributed significantly to the alliance’s victory.
Political observers described the victory as another major boost for the BJP in the Northeast. Himanta Biswa Sarma, who first became Chief Minister in 2021, has played a key role in expanding the BJP’s influence across northeastern states through aggressive campaigning, welfare initiatives, and infrastructure projects.
Speaking after taking oath, Himanta Biswa Sarma thanked the people of Assam for re-electing the NDA government and promised to continue focusing on Development, Employment generation, Welfare schemes, Roads, Healthcare, Education and Protection of Assam’s culture and identity.
He also said the new government would continue its crackdown on corruption, illegal land encroachment, and drug trafficking while accelerating investment and industrial growth in the state.
Supporters of the BJP celebrated across Assam after the swearing-in ceremony, with party workers gathering in Guwahati and several districts carrying party flags, bursting crackers and distributing sweets.
The second consecutive term for Himanta Biswa Sarma is being seen as a significant political achievement and a sign of the BJP’s continuing dominance in Assam and the Northeast region.
