The Election Commission of India (ECI) has directed the Director General of Police (DGP) of West Bengal to review what it described as a “Lapse” in police deployment during a recent electoral process.
According to officials, the Commission took note of reports indicating gaps in security arrangements at certain locations. It has asked the state’s top police official to examine the issue in detail and submit a report on the circumstances that led to the lapse.
The ECI emphasized the importance of proper security deployment to ensure free and fair elections. It said any shortcomings in law enforcement arrangements during polling or related activities could affect the integrity of the democratic process.
Sources indicated that the Commission is closely monitoring the situation and may issue further directions based on the findings of the review. The DGP has been asked to identify accountability and suggest corrective measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
Election-related security is a key responsibility of state authorities, with central guidelines issued by the ECI to maintain order and voter confidence.
The development comes amid heightened political sensitivity in the state, where elections are closely watched for both administrative efficiency and fairness.
In short, the ECI’s directive aims to strengthen election security and ensure that any lapses are addressed quickly and effectively.
