BMC Election 2026: AIMIM to Contest Around 50 Seats as Mumbai Prepares for Crucial Civic Polls

BMC Election 2026 Update

Mumbai: Political activity has intensified ahead of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections 2026, with major parties finalising strategies for one of India’s most influential civic bodies. Polling is scheduled for January 15, with results expected on January 16, 2026, covering all 227 wards of the BMC.

AIMIM’s Participation and Seat Plan

The All India Majlis E Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) has announced that it will actively contest the BMC elections and is expected to field candidates in around 50 wards in Mumbai. The party aims to expand its presence in urban local bodies and focus on issues related to basic civic amenities, housing, sanitation, education, water supply and fair representation.

AIMIM leaders have stated that their campaign will prioritise marginalised and under served localities, while also encouraging minorities, youth and first time voters to actively participate in the democratic process.

Broader Political Landscape

The BMC election is witnessing intense competition as alliances and strategies evolve:

  • The BJP-led Mahayuti alliance, including the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena faction, has released candidate lists and stepped up campaigning.
  • Shiv Sena (UBT) and MNS are targeting traditional strongholds with local issue-based campaigns.
  • Congress and other opposition parties are assessing selective contests to maximise impact.

With AIMIM entering the contest in a significant number of seats, triangular and multi cornered contests are expected in several wards.

Key Issues in the Election

Across Mumbai, voters are focusing on:

  • Water supply and drainage
  • Solid waste management
  • Road and infrastructure development
  • Affordable housing
  • Public health and education facilities

AIMIM’s campaign, in particular, highlights the need for equitable civic services and accountability in densely populated areas.

The election process has also seen legal scrutiny, with petitions before the Mumbai High Court alleging irregularities in nomination procedures. These developments have added to the political tension in the run up to polling.

What Lies Ahead

With just days left for voting:

  • Polling Day: January 15, 2026
  • Counting & Results: January 16, 2026

Political observers note that the BMC results will not only shape Mumbai’s civic governance but may also influence Maharashtra’s broader political direction ahead of future state and national elections.
