Russian Forces Make Gains in Pokrovsk Amid Heavy Fog

Pokrovsk, Ukraine: Heavy fog across eastern Ukraine has given Russian forces a tactical edge in their latest push into the embattled city of Pokrovsk, allowing Moscow’s troops to advance deeper into Ukrainian held territory while blunting the effectiveness of Kyiv’s drone operations.

According to Ukrainian military officials, around 300 Russian soldiers have entered Pokrovsk’s southern and eastern outskirts, using dense fog as cover for rapid infiltration. The weather has severely restricted aerial visibility, limiting Ukraine’s reconnaissance and strike drones tools that have been central to the country’s defensive strategy since the start of the war.

Fog Turns Battlefield in Russia’s Favor

Ukrainian officers on the ground report that the fog has become an unexpected ally for Russia. The reduced visibility has grounded most of Kyiv’s surveillance drones, making it difficult to track Russian movements or target convoys.
“Fog blurs everything. Drones are blind, artillery can’t correct fire and we can’t see them until they’re close,” said one Ukrainian soldier near the frontline.

In video clips shared on Russian Telegram channels, troops were seen entering Pokrovsk on motorbikes civilian cars and trucks in what observers described as “Mad Max style” convoys. Many vehicles appeared improvised, carrying troops and ammunition through shattered streets, taking advantage of the weather to move undetected.

Strategic Importance of Pokrovsk

Pokrovsk, once a bustling coal mining hub with a pre-war population of nearly 60,000, has become a focal point in the Donetsk region. The city serves as a major logistical and rail link between Ukrainian defensive lines and the key eastern strongholds of Kramatorsk and Sloviansk.
Military analysts warn that if Pokrovsk falls or becomes fully encircled, Ukraine’s supply corridor to the northern Donetsk front could collapse a severe setback for Kyiv’s forces.

Ukrainian Resistance Under Pressure

Despite the challenging conditions, Ukrainian troops are continuing to fight. Officials in Kyiv said defensive lines remain intact, although the city is now surrounded on three sides. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy acknowledged that the battle has entered a “difficult phase,” citing weather conditions and Russia’s intensified offensive.
General Oleksandr Syrskyi, Commander in Chief of Ukraine’s Armed Forces, confirmed that Russian troops are exploiting the fog to infiltrate between Ukrainian positions in multiple sectors, not just Pokrovsk.

Russian Tactics Evolve

The latest offensive marks a shift from Moscow’s earlier strategy of large scale assaults. Instead, Russian units appear to be advancing in small, mobile groups often using motorcycles and SUVs to reduce visibility and target exposure.
Military analysts note that this adaptation demonstrates lessons learned from months of high casualties in open field combat. The use of fog for concealment, combined with rapid ground mobility, has given Russia temporary tactical momentum.

Civilians at Risk

Local authorities report that hundreds of residents are still trapped in Pokrovsk, with evacuation convoys halted due to poor visibility and ongoing shelling. Power outages and communication disruptions have been reported throughout the city. Humanitarian agencies warn that conditions are deteriorating rapidly as fighting moves closer to residential zones.

What Comes Next

With winter setting in, analysts say weather will increasingly shape the tempo of operations across eastern Ukraine.
“The fog may help Russian advances now, but it can just as easily hinder them later,” said one European military expert. “When the skies clear, Ukraine’s drones will return to the air and that could shift momentum again.”

For now, Pokrovsk remains a critical flashpoint a city shrouded in fog, uncertainty and fierce resistance as both armies battle for control of one of Donetsk’s last major Ukrainian held strongholds.
