Telangana is reeling under the impact of relentless heavy rains, with several districts recording more than 200 mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours. The downpour has led to flash floods, inundation of low-lying areas, and widespread disruption of transport and daily life.
Districts Worst Affected
Officials reported that northern Telangana districts such as Nizamabad, Kamareddy, Adilabad, and parts of Karimnagar were among the worst hit. Streams and minor rivers have swollen, overflowing onto roads and breaching bunds in some areas. Bridges in rural belts were submerged, cutting off dozens of villages from district headquarters.
Urban Flooding in Hyderabad
In Hyderabad, persistent showers left many roads waterlogged, particularly in LB Nagar, Hayathnagar, Banjara Hills, and parts of Secunderabad. Traffic snarls stretched for hours, and GHMC emergency teams were deployed to pump out water in residential colonies.
Relief and Rescue Operations
The state disaster management authority (TSDMA) has issued warnings in vulnerable districts, urging people not to venture near water bodies or attempt to cross flooded roads.
- NDRF and SDRF teams have been dispatched to low lying villages to assist with evacuations.
- Relief camps have been set up in schools and community halls to shelter displaced families.
- Power supply was disrupted in many parts of Nizamabad and Karimnagar, though restoration efforts are underway.
Government Response
Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy held a review meeting with senior officials and instructed district collectors to remain on high alert. The CM directed irrigation department staff to monitor major projects, including Sri Ram Sagar and Nizam Sagar, which are receiving heavy inflows. Authorities have started releasing water downstream to maintain dam safety.
Forecast Ahead
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that heavy to very heavy rainfall will continue in Telangana for the next 48 hours under the influence of a low pressure system over the Bay of Bengal. Yellow and orange alerts have been issued for several districts.
Public Advisory
Authorities have appealed to citizens to stay indoors unless necessary, avoid travel in flood-prone areas, and follow official alerts closely.
