On July 4, 2025, President of India Smt. Droupadi Murmu officially unveiled and flagged off the prestigious Durand Cup 2025 trophies during a ceremony held at the Rashtrapati Bhavan Cultural Centre.
Speaking at the event, President Murmu highlighted the unifying and transformative role of sports in society. She noted that sports instill qualities like discipline, perseverance, and teamwork, and serve as a powerful means of bringing together individuals, communities, and nations. “In India, sports have played a crucial role in fostering national unity. The entire country swells with pride when our flag is hoisted on international podiums,” she said.
Turning her attention to football, the President emphasized the game’s deep emotional connection with fans across the country. “Football isn’t just a game — it’s a shared passion. It demands strategy, stamina, and collaboration, all aimed at achieving a common goal,” she remarked.
She also praised the Durand Cup, India’s oldest football tournament, for nurturing talent and supporting the growth of the sport. President Murmu commended the Armed Forces for their continued dedication in organizing and promoting the tournament, keeping its rich legacy alive and inspiring young players across the nation.
