Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra were briefly detained by Delhi Police on Monday after leading a protest near Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s residence against the police action on students demonstrating over the alleged NEET paper leak.
The protest was organized by the Congress party to condemn the recent police crackdown on student demonstrators in Delhi. Party leaders accused the government of suppressing democratic protests instead of addressing students’ concerns about examination irregularities.
Rahul Gandhi alleged that students seeking justice were met with force and demanded an independent investigation into the examination controversy. Priyanka Gandhi also criticized the government’s handling of the protests, calling for accountability and dialogue with students.
As Congress workers attempted to march toward the Prime Minister’s residence, Delhi Police stopped the procession, citing security restrictions in the high-security zone. Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, and several senior Congress leaders were briefly taken into preventive custody before being released later in the day.
The incident led to disruptions in Parliament’s Monsoon Session, with Opposition parties raising slogans and demanding a discussion on the police action and the alleged examination paper leak. The government defended the police response, stating that security protocols around the Prime Minister’s residence had to be enforced.
The Congress has announced that it will continue nationwide protests, while the government has reiterated its commitment to taking strict action against those responsible for any examination-related irregularities.
