NEW DELHI: The Department of School Education and Literacy (DoSEL), under the Union Ministry of Education, is organising initiatives to improve administrative efficiency, promote school cleanliness and encourage responsible electronic waste (e-waste) management under Special Campaign 6, being implemented from October 2 to 31, 2026.
As part of the campaign, a nationwide e-waste awareness and collection drive is scheduled for October 28, aiming to educate students and teachers about the environmental impact of discarded electronic equipment and the importance of safe disposal.
Three Key Priorities Under Special Campaign 6
The campaign focuses on three major areas:
- Administrative efficiency: Reducing pending official work, digitising records, reviewing files and removing obsolete documents.
- Clean school campuses: Encouraging schools to maintain clean and hygienic environments through activities led by Eco Clubs for Mission LiFE.
- E-waste management: Raising awareness among students and teachers about reducing electronic waste and ensuring that discarded equipment reaches authorised disposal channels.
These initiatives aim to promote better governance, healthier educational environments and environmentally responsible habits among students.
E-Waste Mural Made from 50 Kg of Discarded Electronics
- To mark International E-Waste Day on October 14, DoSEL installed an e-waste mural and collection bins at Kartavya Bhavan 2 in New Delhi.
- According to the Ministry of Education, the mural was created using 50 kg of e-waste collected by school students. It promotes the message of “Reduce, Reuse and Recycle”, in line with the objectives of the National Education Policy 2020 and Eco Clubs for Mission LiFE.
- The collection bins provide designated facilities for gathering discarded electronic items and highlight the importance of responsible e-waste handling.
States and Union Territories Asked to Prepare
- On October 16, DoSEL Secretary T. K. Anil Kumar chaired a video conference with representatives of States, Union Territories and autonomous bodies to review preparations for the October 28 drive.
- During the meeting, participants discussed awareness and information campaigns and the need to establish arrangements for transferring collected e-waste to authorised vendors.
- The initiative is intended to strengthen coordination between educational institutions and the agencies responsible for handling electronic waste.
Promoting Environmental Awareness Among Students
- Through school cleanliness activities and e-waste collection initiatives, the Ministry of Education aims to encourage students to take an active role in protecting the environment.
- Responsible disposal is particularly important because discarded electronic devices can contain materials that pose environmental and health risks when handled improperly.
- The campaign encourages schools and communities to adopt sustainable practices and ensure that electronic waste is managed through appropriate channels.
Conclusion
- Special Campaign 6 combines administrative reforms, school cleanliness and environmental awareness. The nationwide e-waste drive scheduled for October 28 is expected to provide schools with an opportunity to promote responsible disposal practices and encourage students to contribute to a cleaner environment.
