Gaza City: Families in Gaza held a mass funeral for around 100 people whose remains were recently recovered from destroyed buildings in the Zeitoun area of Gaza City.
Reports said many of those recovered were women and children, including around 70 children, according to Palestinian journalists.
Gaza Civil Defense teams spent several days searching through the rubble with limited equipment. Among the remains recovered were 55 people from a single family home, which was reportedly destroyed in an Israeli airstrike on November 19, 2023. The building was said to have been sheltering more than 60 displaced people.
Rescue workers said the recovery operation was extremely difficult because of a shortage of heavy machinery and other equipment. Much of the work had to be done by hand.
Families and mourners gathered for the funeral as the recovered remains were prepared for burial. Palestinian flags, flowers and candles were used during the farewell ceremony.
The recovery is part of continuing efforts to locate people believed to remain trapped beneath collapsed buildings in Gaza.
