Mumbai: HDFC Bank Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Sashidhar Jagdishan has decided not to seek another term and will step down from the leadership of India’s largest private-sector lender on October 26, 2026, when his current term ends.

The bank said Jagdishan reiterated his decision despite the board’s efforts to persuade him to continue.

Nearly Three Decades at HDFC Bank

  • Jagdishan has spent nearly 30 years with HDFC Bank, rising from a finance role to become its MD and CEO in October 2020, succeeding longtime chief Aditya Puri.
  • One of the defining events during his tenure was the completion of HDFC Bank’s merger with HDFC Ltd. in July 2023. The merger created one of India’s largest financial services institutions and significantly expanded the bank’s scale and operations.

Why Is His Exit Significant?

  • Jagdishan’s decision comes at a time when HDFC Bank has faced increased scrutiny over corporate governance and its post-merger performance.
  • Former part time chairman Atanu Chakraborty resigned in March 2026, citing ethical differences and concerns about certain internal practices.
  • In July, the bank’s board also took action against Jagdishan and two other executives over what it described as a “Business overreach” matter involving deposit rates for a state agency. An external review reportedly found no evidence supporting broader concerns surrounding the matter.
  • These developments have added to investor uncertainty and put additional attention on the bank’s leadership transition.

Bank Begins Search for Successor

  • HDFC Bank’s board has decided to fast track the process of identifying and appointing Jagdishan’s successor.
  • The bank has not officially announced a replacement. Senior executive Kaizad Bharucha has been mentioned in media reports as a potential contender, but no appointment should be considered confirmed until officially announced by the bank.

Financial Position Remains Important

  • Despite the leadership and governance challenges, HDFC Bank continues to maintain a significant position in India’s banking sector.
  • The leadership transition will be closely watched by investors, customers and the financial markets, particularly because the bank is still working to realise the full benefits of the HDFC Ltd. merger.

What Happens Next?

  • Jagdishan will remain in his position until the close of business on October 26, 2026.
  • The bank now faces the task of selecting a successor capable of managing India’s largest private sector bank while maintaining growth, strengthening governance and improving investor confidence.

Bottom Line: Sashidhar Jagdishan’s departure marks the end of an important chapter for HDFC Bank and sets up one of India’s most significant banking leadership transitions of 2026.
