KATHMANDU/NEW DELHI: Severe flash floods have struck Nepal’s Rasuwa district near the Tibet border, causing widespread destruction and leaving hundreds of people missing.

The flooding has damaged roads, bridges, homes and other infrastructure, making rescue operations difficult in the mountainous region.

More than 100 Indians have reportedly been listed as missing or out of contact, although authorities are still working to verify their status.

India’s Response

Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Nepal Prime Minister Balendra Shah, expressed condolences over the loss of lives and assured Nepal of India’s humanitarian support.

India has also sent around 10 tonnes of humanitarian assistance and essential medicines to flood hit Nepal. The relief supplies reportedly include temporary shelters, blankets, hygiene kits, solar lamps and medicines.

The Indian Embassy in Kathmandu has issued emergency contact numbers for Indians affected by the floods and is coordinating assistance with Nepalese authorities.

Situation Remains Critical

Nepalese security forces continue search and rescue operations. Authorities are also monitoring downstream areas, including parts of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, because rising Himalayan rivers could create additional flood risks.

Key takeaway: Nepal is facing a serious flash-flood emergency, while India is providing humanitarian assistance and helping affected Indian nationals.
