Union MSME Minister and former Bihar Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi has once again found himself at the centre of a political controversy after making remarks about the term “Harijan” during a public event.
Speaking at the event, Manjhi said that those referred to as “Harijan” have “Gone to Hell” adding that the term should no longer be used for members of the Scheduled Castes. He argued that “Harijan” is an outdated expression and said people should instead use the terms “Dalit” or “Scheduled Caste”
His comments quickly drew criticism from opposition parties and social activists, who accused the minister of making insensitive and controversial statements. Critics said public representatives should exercise caution while speaking on issues related to caste and demanded an explanation for his remarks.
Supporters of Manjhi, however, defended his statement, saying it was not directed against any community. They argued that his intention was to oppose the continued use of the word “Harijan” which many Dalit organisations have rejected for years and to encourage the use of more appropriate and officially accepted terminology.
The term “Harijan” meaning “Children of God” was popularised by Mahatma Gandhi. However, over the years, many Dalit groups have objected to its use, arguing that it is patronising and does not reflect their identity. In recent years, several government departments and courts have also advised against using the term in official communications, recommending “Scheduled Caste” instead.
The latest remarks have reignited debate over caste terminology and are expected to fuel further political discussions in the coming days.
