12 Indians Among 13 Dead in Qatar Gas Plant Explosion

A devastating explosion at a major gas processing facility in Qatar has claimed the lives of 13 workers, including 12 Indian nationals, making it one of the deadliest industrial accidents involving Indian workers in the Gulf region in recent years.

The blast occurred on 21 June at the Barzan Gas Processing Plant located in Ras Laffan Industrial City, a key hub of Qatar’s natural gas industry. According to Qatari authorities, the explosion took place during restart operations at the facility following maintenance work.

Emergency response teams rushed to the site after the powerful blast, which sent shockwaves through parts of the industrial complex. Authorities confirmed that 13 workers were killed and 66 others injured. Most of the injured were treated for burns, fractures and blast related injuries, while officials said no major gas leak was detected after the incident.

Qatar’s Ministry of Energy stated that preliminary findings indicate the explosion was caused by a technical malfunction during operational procedures. Officials emphasized that there is currently no evidence of sabotage, terrorism, or any hostile attack. A high level investigation committee has been formed to determine the exact cause of the accident and identify any safety failures.

The Indian Embassy in Doha confirmed that 12 of the deceased were Indian citizens employed at the facility through contracting companies. Embassy officials are coordinating with Qatari authorities, employers and the victims’ families to facilitate documentation, compensation procedures and the repatriation of remains to India.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs expressed deep condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and said it is closely monitoring the situation. Officials are also working to ensure that injured Indian workers receive necessary medical assistance.

The Barzan facility forms part of the larger Ras Laffan Industrial City, one of the world’s most important centers for liquefied natural gas (LNG) production and export. Qatar is among the world’s leading LNG exporters, supplying energy to countries across Asia, Europe and other regions.

Despite the tragedy, Qatari authorities said the country’s overall LNG export operations remain largely unaffected. However, industry analysts note that investigations and safety reviews could temporarily affect some operational schedules at the facility.

The incident has renewed attention on workplace safety standards in large industrial projects across the Gulf, where millions of expatriate workers, including a significant number of Indians, are employed in the energy, construction and infrastructure sectors.
