CBI Finds Synthetic Ghee in Tirupati Laddu, No Beef Tallow, Naidu’s Claim Debunked

CBI Finds Synthetic Ghee in Tirupati Laddu

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has found that synthetic ghee was used in the preparation of Tirupati Laddu at certain points, but there is no evidence of beef tallow being mixed into the prasadam, according to officials familiar with the probe.

The investigation was initiated following allegations made by Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, who had claimed that animal fat, including beef tallow, was used in the sacred laddu offered at the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD). The claim had triggered widespread political controversy and religious outrage.

CBI officials stated that laboratory analysis of samples collected from storage facilities and suppliers showed traces of adulterated or synthetic ghee but did not confirm the presence of beef tallow. The findings contradict the earlier public allegation that cow or buffalo meat fat was deliberately mixed into the laddus.

Sources said the probe focused on the supply chain of ghee used by contractors and vendors associated with TTD. While irregularities in procurement and quality checks were found, investigators concluded that the issue was related to adulteration for cost-cutting rather than religious targeting.

The agency has reportedly identified lapses in quality control mechanisms and possible manipulation of supply contracts. Officials said action will be taken against suppliers found to have violated food safety norms and contractual obligations.

Religious authorities associated with the Tirumala temple have welcomed the clarification, stating that the sanctity of the laddu was not compromised by the use of beef tallow, as alleged earlier. They also said stricter monitoring and testing of ingredients would be implemented going forward.

Opposition leaders have accused the Andhra Pradesh government of making irresponsible claims without evidence and using the issue for political advantage. They demanded an apology for spreading what they called misinformation that hurt religious sentiments.

The state government, meanwhile, said it would study the CBI findings in detail and ensure that all necessary steps are taken to prevent any future adulteration of temple prasadam.

The controversy has once again highlighted the need for stronger food safety regulations, transparent procurement processes, and independent audits in institutions managing religious offerings consumed by millions of devotees.

The CBI is expected to submit its detailed report to the court and the state authorities in the coming days.
