Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi launched a sharp attack during the debate on electoral reforms calling “Vote Chori” (vote theft) the Biggest anti national act and accusing the government of systematically weakening democratic institutions.
Speaking during the discussion Gandhi alleged that there is ongoing Institutional capture of key bodies including the Election Commission, CBI, Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Income Tax Department. He claimed that these institutions, which are meant to function independently are being compromised for political interests.
Gandhi further said that the RSS has attempted to influence and control national institutions for decades. “After the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi the next step of the project was to capture the institutional framework of the country” he stated, accusing the organisation of expanding its influence across Administrative, Educational and Constitutional structures.
The Congress MP also criticised the process of appointments in higher education, alleging that Vice Chancellors in universities are selected not on Merit, Qualifications or Scientific outlook but based on their ideological affiliation. Without naming the RSS directly he hinted that individuals linked to a “Particular organisation” are given preference regardless of academic credentials.
Gandhi’s remarks triggered sharp exchanges in the House with Treasury benches rejecting his allegations calling them politically motivated. However the Opposition benches backed his statements and reiterated concerns about the need to safeguard democratic institutions and ensure transparency in the electoral process.
The debate comes at a time when the government is pushing for major electoral reforms while the Opposition has demanded strong safeguards to ensure Free, Fair and Unbiased elections.
