Washington: The United States has downplayed reports claiming that Russia provided intelligence to Iran that could help Tehran target American military assets in the Middle East, as tensions remain high during the ongoing regional conflict.
Recent media reports suggested that Russia may have shared information with Iran about the movement or location of U.S. military ships, aircraft, or bases in the region. Such intelligence could potentially help Iranian forces monitor or plan strikes against American targets.
However, officials in Washington said the reports should not be overstated. The White House stated that even if some information had been shared, it has not significantly impacted U.S. military operations or the ability of American forces to defend themselves.
U.S. officials also stressed that there is no confirmed evidence showing Russia directly coordinating or guiding Iranian attacks. According to officials, the alleged intelligence may only involve general awareness of U.S. deployments rather than operational or tactical support.
The claims come at a time of heightened conflict in the Middle East, where Iranian missile and drone attacks have targeted U.S. positions and regional allies. Security analysts say any intelligence cooperation between Moscow and Tehran would highlight the growing strategic relationship between the two countries.
Russia and Iran have strengthened their military ties in recent years, particularly in areas such as defense cooperation and weapons technology. However, Russian authorities have not publicly confirmed the allegations of intelligence sharing.
Despite the reports, U.S. defense officials say American forces in the region remain fully prepared to defend their bases and continue operations.
