A Hyderabad court has granted conditional bail to two senior journalists who were arrested in connection with an alleged fake news and defamation case involving a serving woman IAS officer, even as a Special Investigation Team (SIT) continues its probe into the matter.
The journalists, associated with a Telugu news channel, were taken into custody following a complaint by the Telangana IAS Officers Association, which alleged that a news report aired by the channel contained false and defamatory allegations against the officer and a state minister.
Police registered a case and formed an SIT to investigate the broadcast. One journalist was reportedly detained at the airport, while the other was arrested at his residence, triggering widespread debate and criticism from media bodies, opposition leaders and civil rights groups over press freedom and the manner of the arrests.
The Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate granted bail after hearing arguments from both sides, rejecting the police request for judicial custody. The court imposed conditions including furnishing sureties, surrendering passports and restrictions on travel while the investigation remains ongoing.
Hyderabad Police have maintained that the case relates to the circulation of unverified and defamatory content, stressing that freedom of expression must be exercised responsibly and within legal limits. Authorities said the SIT will continue examining evidence, including editorial processes and source verification.
The bail order has brought temporary relief to the journalists, but the case remains under investigation. The issue has reignited a broader discussion in Telangana over Media accountability, Press freedom and the use of criminal law in defamation cases.
