TSPCB Shuts 3 Pharma Units Near Hyderabad Over Suspected Narcotics Links

The Telangana State Pollution Control Board (TSPCB) has ordered the closure of three pharmaceutical manufacturing units located on the outskirts of Hyderabad after suspected links were found between their operations and the production of narcotics precursor chemicals.

As part of an enforcement drive, officials disconnected power supply to the units and sealed their premises, citing serious violations of environmental and regulatory norms. The action followed inspections that reportedly revealed irregular handling and storage of chemical substances that could potentially be misused for illegal drug manufacturing.

Regulatory Action Taken

TSPCB officials said the units were operating without proper environmental clearances and failed to maintain records on chemical usage and waste disposal. The inspections were carried out after intelligence inputs and complaints raised concerns over the possible diversion of certain chemicals for unlawful purposes.

“The decision to shut down the units was taken in the interest of public safety and environmental protection,” an official said, adding that further investigation would determine whether criminal proceedings are required.

Coordination With Other Agencies

The pollution control board is coordinating with drug control authorities and law enforcement agencies to verify supply chains and production records of the companies involved. Samples of chemicals and wastewater have been collected for laboratory testing, and scrutiny of export and transport documentation is underway.

Officials indicated that if links to narcotics production are confirmed, stricter action will be taken under both environmental and criminal laws.

Industry Impact

The move has sent a strong signal to the pharmaceutical and chemical manufacturing sector in Telangana, which is one of India’s major pharma hubs. Industry observers say the action highlights increasing scrutiny of chemical units and tighter enforcement against misuse of precursor substances.

Local residents near the affected industrial zones welcomed the closures, citing concerns over pollution and safety risks.

Wider Implications

The shutdown underscores the state government’s focus on preventing the misuse of industrial chemicals and strengthening oversight of pharmaceutical operations. Authorities have warned other units to ensure full compliance with environmental standards and maintain transparent production records.

Further inspections of similar facilities in the region are expected as part of a broader compliance and monitoring campaign.
