The Telangana government has announced plans to establish dedicated de-addiction units in all government medical colleges to address the growing problem of substance abuse across the state. The initiative aims to strengthen treatment facilities for people addicted to Drugs and Alcohol, Especially among youth and working age populations.
Rising Concern Over Substance Abuse
Health officials have noted an increase in cases related to alcohol dependence, prescription drug misuse, and narcotic consumption in both urban and rural areas. Hospitals are witnessing a steady rise in patients requiring medical and psychological support for addiction related problems.
Authorities believe that setting up specialized de-addiction units in medical colleges will help ensure early diagnosis, proper counselling, and long term rehabilitation under medical supervision.
What the De-Addiction Units Will Offer
Each unit will be equipped with:
- Trained psychiatrists and clinical psychologists
- Medical staff to manage withdrawal symptoms
- Counselling and behavioural therapy services
- Facilities for short term inpatient care
- Awareness and outreach programmes
The units will also work in coordination with district hospitals and primary health centres to refer patients who need specialized care.
Focus on Youth and Vulnerable Groups
Special emphasis will be placed on helping young people who have fallen into substance use due to stress, unemployment, or peer pressure. The government plans to integrate these units with mental health programmes so that addiction is treated as a health issue rather than only a law and order problem.
Implementation Plan
The Health Department has been asked to prepare detailed guidelines for staffing, infrastructure, and funding. The first phase of de-addiction units is expected to be launched in major government medical colleges, followed by expansion to other institutions across the state.
Government’s Stand
Officials said the policy reflects a shift towards treatment and rehabilitation instead of punishment, and aims to reduce Drug dependency, Related crimes and Health complications.
Public health experts have welcomed the move, stating that easy access to professional treatment in government hospitals will encourage families to seek help without fear or stigma.
