Telangana & Hyderabad: Severe Rainfall and Flooding

Hyderabad

  • Heavy Rainfall: Hyderabad experienced intense rainfall from late Thursday night into Friday, flooding low lying areas, submerging roads, and causing widespread traffic congestion. Neighborhoods such as Alwal, Malkajgiri, Qutbullapur, and Gajularamaram were among the worst hit.
  • Musi River Overflow: The gates of the Himayat Sagar and Osmansagar reservoirs were opened, leading to the Musi River overflowing near the Chaderghat Bridge. This resulted in significant traffic congestion and the evacuation of over 1,000 residents from low-lying areas.
  • Ongoing Alerts: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for Saturday, forecasting continued heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds reaching 40 – 50 km/h. Residents in low lying areas are advised to remain indoors and prepare for further flooding.

Other Telangana Districts

  • Jayashankar Bhupalpally: A woman died after her house wall collapsed due to persistent rain.
  • Mulugu District: A partial collapse of a house occurred.
  • Sangareddy: Traffic was halted due to inundation on National Highway 65.
  • Mahabubnagar, Vikarabad, Rangareddy: Received heavy rainfall, with Tallapally recording 105 mm.

West Bengal (Kolkata)

  • Cloudburst Incident: On 23 September 2025, an intense cloudburst occurred in Kolkata, causing widespread waterlogging and flash floods around the city. The incident caused 9 deaths in Kolkata and 2 deaths in nearby districts, with 30 injuries and at least 2 people left missing.
  • Rainfall Data: The southern and eastern parts of the city experienced the most intense rainfall, with areas like Garia Kamdahari recording 332 mm of rain in just a few hours.

Maharashtra (Marathwada Region)

  • Flooding: Persistent heavy rainfall in the second and third weeks of September 2025 caused significant waterlogging across industrial areas in Marathwada, including Jalna, Paithan, Waluj, and Krushnur.
  • Government Response: The state government announced projects to reinforce frequently congested roads and improve industrial area access.
  • Rescue Operations: The Indian Army’s Southern Command rescued over 170 people stranded in flood affected Marathwada, where persistent rainfall and dam discharges caused severe flooding over five days.

Uttarakhand (Dehradun)

  • Cloudburst Incident: A devastating cloudburst struck Dehradun late on 15 September 2025, unleashing very heavy rainfall that led to flash floods, landslides, and widespread destruction across the city and surrounding areas such as Sahastradhara, Tapovan, and IT Park.
  • Infrastructure Damage: The overflowing Karligad rivulet caused a bridge collapse on the Dehradun Haridwar highway, severely disrupting traffic and access.

IMD Forecast and Alerts

  • Telangana: The IMD issued a red alert warning of extremely heavy rainfall in isolated locations across Telangana from 8:30 am on Friday, September 26 to 10 am on Saturday, September 27, 2025.
  • Other States: Alerts have also been issued for Odisha and Maharashtra, forecasting heavy rainfall in the coming days.

Emergency Measures and Recommendations

  • Evacuations: Over 1,000 residents were evacuated from low-lying areas in Hyderabad due to the overflowing Musi River.
  • Infrastructure Damage: In Marathwada, significant waterlogging has affected industrial areas, leading to road and infrastructure damage.
  • Rescue Operations: The Indian Army deployed rescue teams to assist stranded individuals in flood-affected regions.
  • Public Safety: Residents in affected areas are advised to stay indoors, avoid travel, and follow local authorities’ instructions.
