What Happened
The Telangana government has sanctioned ₹200 crore to support relief and repair efforts in districts hit by recent heavy floods. The decision comes after torrential rains between August 26 and 28 caused widespread damage to infrastructure, irrigation systems, and homes in several northern districts.
Fund Allocation
Out of the ₹200 crore, ₹10 crore will be given to each severely affected district, while ₹5 crore will go to districts with moderate damage. The funds will be used for:
- Repairing damaged roads, tanks, and canals
- Restoring power supply and drinking water facilities
- Providing compensation to farmers who lost crops
- Support for families whose homes were damaged or destroyed
The districts of Kamareddy, Medak, Nirmal, and Nizamabad are among the worst affected. Officials have been directed to prioritize essential infrastructure repairs to restore normalcy at the earliest.
Impact of Floods
The downpour damaged over 600 minor irrigation tanks across the state, leading to breaches and loss of standing crops. Several rural roads were washed away, and low lying areas experienced flooding that forced temporary evacuations. Farmers, in particular, have faced severe losses due to submerged agricultural fields.
Government’s Stand
State ministers assured that the relief package is only an immediate measure. Further assistance may be considered once a detailed damage assessment is completed. Officials have been told to ensure transparent and speedy disbursal of funds so that affected families and farmers benefit without delay.
Bottom Line
The ₹200 crore relief fund is a short term response to one of the worst flood spells Telangana has seen this season. While it will help repair immediate damage, the long term challenge remains strengthening the state’s flood management and irrigation systems to prevent such large scale losses in the future.
