Telangana Announces Sweeping Reforms in Intermediate (10 - 12) Education

The Telangana government has approved a comprehensive reform package for Intermediate (Class 11 & 12) education to be implemented from the 2026-27 academic year, aimed at strengthening practical learning, evaluation patterns and overall quality of education.

Key Changes

  • Practical examinations will now be extended to First Year Intermediate students (Class 11) in all streams (Science, Commerce, Arts), addressing long standing demands for hands-on assessment in the early years.
  • The evaluation pattern will shift to an 80:20 model 80 % for external theory exams and 20 % for internal assessments including activities, projects and practicals across all subjects.
  • The syllabus for certain streams such as MPC (Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry) will be rationalised reducing overlap, aligning better with higher education entrance requirements and bringing it in line with NCERT standards.
  • A new group course titled “AEC” (Accounts, Economics, Commerce) will be introduced from the next academic year to provide a stronger foundational option for commerce oriented students.
  • Textbooks will be updated and re-printed with QR codes linking to digital learning resources; the curriculum will be made more practical and application oriented, rather than purely theory.
  • For language subjects and humanities, internal assessment components will emphasise speaking skills, thesis projects and regional themes for example, in Arabic the focus will include enhanced conversational ability and in History students may prepare local region thesis work.

Why These Reforms

  • According to the Education Secretary of the Telangana Board of Intermediate Education (TGBIE), the changes are designed to:
  • Bring the Intermediate system closer to national patterns (such as CBSE) and other boards, ensuring students are better prepared for higher education and competitive exams.
  • Shift focus from rote learning to practical and applied learning, improving employability and foundational skills.
  • Address the drop-off in performance from Class 10 to Intermediate levels setting a target of improved pass rates and reduced student attrition.

Implementation & Timeline

  • The timeline for the reforms: The new patterns and syllabus updates will be introduced from the academic year 2026-27. Schools & colleges will receive new textbooks and digital learning materials ahead of the first term.
  • Fee payment, practical exam schedules and internal assessment guidelines will be shared by the Board by December 2025.
  • Teachers will be trained in new assessment methods, internal project design and digital resource utilisation over the next few months.

What to Watch

  • Whether the 80:20 internal assessment and practicals for First Year are implemented smoothly and resources (labs, teacher training) are ready.
  • How students and parents respond to the increased emphasis on internal projects, speaking & activity based learning.
  • How infrastructure (labs, digital devices, internet access) in rural and remote Intermediate colleges is upgraded to match the new demands.
  • Whether the reforms boost pass rates, reduce dropout rates and prepare students better for university and jobs.
