Tejashwi, Rabri Devi Face Legal Challenge & Political Pressure Ahead of Bihar Polls

Charges Framed in IRCTC Hotel Scam

A Delhi court has formally framed charges of corruption, criminal conspiracy and cheating against former Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav, along with Rabri Devi and Tejashwi Yadav, in a long running IRCTC hotel corruption case.

The allegations stem from purported irregularities in awarding maintenance contracts for two IRCTC hotels during Lalu’s tenure as Union Minister. The court observed that there was enough evidence to proceed with a trial, citing signs of abuse of official position and financial irregularities.

All accused have pleaded not guilty, asserting that the case is politically motivated. Reacting to the development, Tejashwi Yadav said it was another example of political vendetta aimed at derailing his party’s campaign ahead of the Bihar elections.

Tejashwi’s Election Campaign Promises & Challenges

Ahead of the elections, Tejashwi Yadav has launched a strong campaign, promising a government job for every household in Bihar if his party comes to power.

However, economists and opposition leaders have questioned the feasibility of the promise, pointing out that the total number of government jobs in the entire country is around 2.65 crore making the promise of 3 crore jobs in Bihar alone unrealistic.

Political analysts have identified several major challenges that could obstruct Tejashwi’s path:

  • The rising influence of Prashant Kishor and his campaign team.
  • Vote splitting due to AIMIM’s growing presence in certain constituencies.
  • Internal rifts within the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD).
  • Difficulty in consolidating traditional caste based vote banks amid new alliances.

In his speeches, Tejashwi has repeatedly emphasized the need for a Chief Minister who “roars, not pleads” presenting himself as a young, dynamic alternative to the current leadership.

Rabri Devi’s Political Role

Rabri Devi, former Chief Minister and wife of Lalu Prasad Yadav, remains a significant figure in Bihar politics. She has been named as a co-accused in the IRCTC case along with her husband and son.

Currently, Rabri Devi serves as the Leader of the Opposition in the Bihar Legislative Council and continues to actively support her party’s campaign efforts. Despite the legal challenges, she has maintained that the RJD will emerge stronger and that the cases against her family are “politically motivated.”

Political Impact

The framing of charges comes at a crucial time just months before the Bihar Assembly Elections 2025. It is expected to become a major talking point in the campaign, with the RJD portraying it as an attack on opposition voices, while rivals use it to question the credibility of Tejashwi’s leadership.

The political temperature in Bihar is heating up rapidly and this development adds another layer of complexity to what is shaping up to be one of the most closely watched elections in recent years.
