Teacher Unions Seek Extension of Sankranti Holidays

Teacher unions in Telangana urged the state government to adjust the Sankranti vacation schedule for schools to avoid reopening immediately after the festival.

Current Holiday Schedule

  • The School Education Department had announced Sankranti holidays from 11 January to 15 January 2026.
  • January 10 falls on a Saturday.
  • January 15 is a Sankranti festival holiday.
  • January 16 is an optional Kanuma holiday.

Unions Demand

  • Teacher associations requested that the government extend the holidays and reopen schools on 19 January 2026.
  • They said many families travel to their native places during Sankranti and students may not return immediately after the festival.

Reason Behind the Request

  • Sankranti is a major festival across Telangana.
  • Immediate reopening could lead to low attendance and absenteeism.
  • An extended break would help students return refreshed and reduce academic disruption.

Current Status

  • As of now, no official government order has been issued.
  • The proposal is under consideration by the state authorities.
