Shipping Collapse in Strait of Hormuz Raises Global Energy Fears

Shipping Collapse in Strait of Hormuz

Global shipping through the Strait of Hormuz one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints has sharply declined since the start of the Iran war, disrupting energy flows and raising fears of a wider economic impact.

Data from maritime tracking agencies shows vessel traffic through the strait has fallen by around 90 to 95%, with some days seeing only a handful of ships attempting the passage. Once handling dozens of oil tankers daily, the route has nearly ground to a halt as security risks escalate.

The Strait of Hormuz is a vital artery for global trade, carrying roughly one fifth of the world’s oil supply. The sharp drop in traffic follows escalating military activity, including attacks on ships, mine threats, and security warnings, prompting shipping companies and insurers to suspend operations in the region.

Major global shipping firms have either halted transit or rerouted vessels, while many ships remain anchored outside the Gulf awaiting safer conditions. Insurance providers have also withdrawn war-risk coverage, further discouraging passage through the high risk zone.

The disruption has already begun to ripple through global markets, with oil prices rising amid fears of prolonged supply shortages. Analysts warn that if the situation continues, it could trigger wider economic consequences, particularly for countries heavily dependent on Gulf energy imports, including India, China and Japan.

International efforts are underway to stabilize the situation, with calls for secure maritime corridors and naval protection for commercial vessels. However, with tensions still high and no clear resolution in sight, the Strait of Hormuz remains one of the most dangerous and strategically important flashpoints in the ongoing conflict.
