New Delhi, Nov 12:
The Indian government has officially classified Monday’s deadly car explosion near Delhi’s historic Red Fort as a “Terrorist incident”, confirming fears that one of the capital’s most iconic landmarks was targeted in a coordinated attack.
According to officials, the explosion occurred during peak evening traffic near the Lahori Gate side of the Red Fort, sending shockwaves through the busy area. At least twelve people were killed and more than thirty others injured, with several vehicles engulfed in flames following the blast.
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has taken over the probe, registering a case under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) India’s principal anti terrorism law granting investigators wider authority to conduct searches and make arrests.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemned the incident, calling it “A dastardly and cowardly act that has claimed innocent lives.” The Union Home Ministry described the attack as the work of “anti national forces attempting to destabilize peace and security.”
Possible Kashmir Link
Preliminary findings indicate that some suspects detained in Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir may be linked to the blast. Security agencies are exploring whether the explosion was connected to a wider “white collar terror” module operating across northern India. Forensic teams are examining remnants of the car and nearby CCTV footage to determine the type and source of explosives used.
A senior Delhi Police official said, “All leads point to a pre-planned operation, but it’s too early to confirm the group or country involved. We are coordinating with multiple intelligence agencies.”
Security Tightened Nationwide
Following the attack, high alert was declared across major cities, with enhanced checks at Airports, Railway stations and Tourist hubs. A suspicious email warning of further explosions was received by several airports, including Delhi’s IGI Airport, leading to temporary evacuations and heightened vigilance.
The Red Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the site of India’s annual Independence Day address, remains sealed off as forensic experts continue their investigation.
Symbolic and Strategic Target
Analysts say the location was likely chosen for its symbolic value. The Red Fort has deep national significance, representing India’s sovereignty and freedom. Targeting such a monument, experts note, is aimed at sowing fear and undermining public confidence in security mechanisms.
While investigators have yet to publicly name any organization, officials have hinted at possible Cross border links, though the government is maintaining caution until conclusive evidence emerges.
Background
The last major terror attack in Delhi occurred more than a decade ago. Since then, the capital has been under tight surveillance, making Monday’s explosion a serious breach of security and intelligence protocols.
Authorities are expected to release preliminary forensic and intelligence findings later this week.
