Police imposed tight security and carried out preventive arrests at Osmania University (OU) as a precautionary measure amid heightened political tension in the city. The action came ahead of BRS working president K.T. Rama Rao’s appearance before the Special Investigation Team (SIT) in connection with the alleged phone tapping case.
According to officials, police entered several hostels on the university campus late Thursday night and detained student leaders and activists affiliated with the BRS student wing (BRSV). The detentions were made to prevent possible protests or disturbances, as calls for demonstrations had reportedly been circulating among student groups.
Barricades were erected at key entry and exit points of the campus and additional police forces were deployed in and around Osmania University. Similar security arrangements were also put in place near Telangana Bhavan and the Jubilee Hills police station, where K.T. Rama Rao was scheduled to appear for questioning.
Reacting strongly, BRSV leaders alleged that the arrests were unwarranted and politically motivated. They accused the state government of attempting to suppress dissent and intimidate students. Party leaders demanded the immediate release of those detained and said peaceful protest is a democratic right.
Police officials, however, maintained that the arrests were purely preventive, taken to ensure law and order and to avoid any untoward incidents. They said the situation on campus remained under control and normal academic activities were not officially suspended.
The developments have once again brought Osmania University into focus, a campus historically known for student activism and political movements in Telangana.
