New Delhi: A powerful explosion shook the area near Delhi’s historic Red Fort on Monday evening, sending shockwaves through the crowded lanes of Chandni Chowk and triggering widespread panic.
The blast, which occurred around 6:52 p.m., was traced to a car that exploded near Gate No. 1 of the Red Fort Metro Station, a busy intersection frequented by tourists and commuters. The impact was so strong that it shattered glass windows, set nearby vehicles ablaze and caused chaos across the bustling market district.
Scene of devastation
Eyewitnesses described a scene of horror flames rising high, thick smoke engulfing the area and people running for safety. Several nearby vehicles, including e-rickshaws and motorcycles, caught fire as debris scattered across the road.
Firefighters and Delhi Police teams rushed to the scene within minutes. Multiple fire tenders battled the blaze, while emergency personnel transported the injured to LNJP Hospital and other nearby medical facilities.
Authorities have so far confirmed at least eight deaths, with over 20 people injured, several of them critically. Some unconfirmed reports suggest the toll could be higher as rescue efforts continue.
Security and investigation
The Delhi Police, National Security Guard (NSG), National Investigation Agency (NIA) and forensic experts have cordoned off the area. Investigators are analyzing CCTV footage from the vicinity to determine the cause and identify any suspects.

Initial reports indicated that the explosion originated from a Hyundai i20 car that had halted at a traffic signal moments before the blast. However, authorities have not yet confirmed whether the cause was A mechanical failure, Gas leak or an Improvised explosive device (IED).

Following the explosion, security has been heightened across the National Capital Region (NCR) and sensitive zones in neighboring states. Police presence has been reinforced at Markets, Metro stations and Major public areas.
The Chandni Chowk Market Association announced that shops will remain closed on Tuesday as a mark of respect to the victims and to allow authorities to carry out safety inspections.
Residents reported hearing the explosion from several kilometers away, describing it as a “Deafening blast” that briefly shook buildings near Jama Masjid and Daryaganj.
Official response
Delhi Chief Minister and senior police officials urged citizens to remain calm and avoid spreading rumors. The Delhi Fire Services confirmed that three to four vehicles were completely gutted and bomb disposal squads continue to sweep the area for any secondary explosives.
Hospitals have been put on Emergency alert and Special helplines have been activated for families of the victims.
Unclear motive
As of now, investigators have not confirmed any terror group’s involvement. Sources indicate that the blast may be linked to recent arrests in Gujarat, where a large cache of explosives was seized last week, though this connection is still under review.
