Peace Fails, War Looms: Taliban Warns Pakistan After Istanbul Talks Break Down

Taliban Warns Pakistan After Istanbul Talks Break Down

The fragile peace process between Afghanistan’s Taliban government and Pakistan has collapsed once again after the latest round of Istanbul mediated talks ended without agreement. The discussions hosted with support from Turkey and Qatar, were aimed at easing months of rising tensions along the Afghanistan Pakistan border but instead ended with harsh warnings from both sides.

According to official statements, the Taliban delegation attended the Istanbul meeting “In good faith and with full authority.” However, they accused Pakistan of adopting an “Irresponsible and non-cooperative attitude,” claiming Islamabad was attempting to shift all security burdens onto Afghanistan while refusing to take responsibility for its own actions.

Pakistan, meanwhile, confirmed the breakdown of talks, with Defence Minister Khawaja Asif saying the negotiations had “Reached an uncertain stage with no results.” Information Minister Attaullah Tarar added that Pakistan would use “all options” to defend its sovereignty if cross border militant attacks continue.

The Main Dispute

At the core of the deadlock is Pakistan’s demand that Kabul take concrete steps to prevent groups such as the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) from using Afghan territory to launch attacks. The Taliban however maintains that it will not allow its soil to be used against any country but refuses to act under foreign pressure.

“The Islamic Emirate will protect its independence and sovereignty. We will not accept interference from anyone, ” A Taliban spokesperson said after the meeting.

Verbal Escalation on Both Sides

The tone of the post talk statements has heightened fears of renewed conflict. Taliban Minister for Borders and Tribal Affairs Noorullah Noori issued a stern warning to Pakistan: “Do not test the patience of Afghans. If war breaks out both the elders and the youth of Afghanistan will rise to fight. Do not be overconfident in your technology.”

In response Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif remarked earlier this week that “If talks fail only war remains,” underscoring Islamabad’s growing frustration with Kabul’s stance.

Ceasefire Holds But Trust Shattered

Although both sides have confirmed that the existing ceasefire along the border remains technically in place, observers say it is fragile. Border incidents have increased in recent months, with both militaries trading blame for cross border shelling and militant infiltration.

Diplomatic sources say there are currently “No plans for a fourth round” of talks and international mediators fear that continued hostility could push both countries toward a dangerous confrontation.

Regional Implications

Analysts warn that the collapse of the Istanbul talks could destabilize the wider region. Pakistan faces mounting security threats in its western provinces, while Afghanistan continues to deal with economic isolation and internal dissent.

With neither side showing signs of compromise, regional actors including Turkey, Qatar and China are urging restraint and renewed dialogue before tensions spiral into open conflict.
