Opposition Demands Debate in Parliament Over U.S. – India Trade Policy Changes

Opposition Demands Debate in Parliament Over U.S.

New Delhi: Opposition parties in the Parliament of India have called for a formal debate on the interim trade policy framework agreed between India and the United States, citing concerns over its impact on Farmers, Workers and Domestic industries.

Opposition leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, have repeatedly urged the government to allow a full discussion in Parliament, arguing that the agreement which reduces reciprocal tariffs between the two countries could negatively affect domestic agriculture and small businesses.

Earlier this week, Lok Sabha proceedings were disrupted as opposition MPs pressed for a debate on the India-U.S. trade framework, leading to adjournment when the Speaker did not take up the discussion. Opposition members said matters affecting farmers’ livelihoods and economic sovereignty should not be sidelined during the ongoing Budget Session.

The government, represented by union ministers, defended the trade framework, stating it would boost exports and open new market opportunities without compromising national interests. However, the opposition has accused the government of failing to provide clear answers on key clauses of the agreement.

The confrontation underscores the ongoing tension in Parliament over balancing international trade diplomacy with protections for local producers, particularly in the agriculture sector, as India seeks to expand economic ties with major partners like the United States.
