India has crossed a historic milestone in its National Health Campaign, marking a significant leap toward universal health coverage, improved disease control and access to affordable care. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare announced that the campaign has now reached over 100 million beneficiaries across the country through various national and state level programs.
Key Achievements
The National Health Campaign (NHC) launched under the Ayushman Bharat umbrella integrates several national missions focusing on preventive care, maternal and child health, and communicable disease eradication.
According to government data, major accomplishments include:
- Over 10 crore families enrolled under Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY).
- 98% vaccination coverage achieved under the Mission Indradhanush 5.0 drive.
- Significant reduction in malaria and tuberculosis cases across multiple states.
- Expansion of telemedicine services to 6 lakh villages through eSanjeevani platform.
- Over 4 lakh health and wellness centres made operational nationwide.
Focus on Preventive and Digital Health
The 2025 phase of the campaign emphasizes preventive care, AI-assisted health diagnostics and digital health records integration. The government’s Digital Health ID initiative aims to create a unified medical record for every citizen by 2026, improving access and transparency.
Minister of Health Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya stated that “India is now transitioning from a treatment based to a prevention based healthcare model the future lies in early detection and community awareness.”
Challenges Ahead
Despite notable progress, rural and remote regions continue to face challenges such as shortage of doctors, limited infrastructure and inadequate health awareness. Experts suggest:
- Strengthening primary healthcare infrastructure in tribal and backward areas.
- Ensuring steady medical supply chains for vaccines and essential drugs.
- Increasing awareness on lifestyle diseases, mental health and nutrition.
Public Awareness and Citizen Role
The government has urged citizens to actively participate in health camps and wellness programs organized under the campaign. Awareness drives are ongoing in schools, workplaces, and community centres, focusing on clean habits, balanced diet, physical fitness and mental well being.
What’s Next
The Health Ministry plans to integrate the National Health Campaign with AI-driven platforms and expand its reach to cover chronic disease management, mental health services and women’s wellness initiatives by the end of 2026.
Expert View
Public health experts say the milestone reflects India’s growing focus on inclusive healthcare and preventive systems. “The next phase must address long term sustainability especially for rural populations,” said Dr. N.K. Arora, senior advisor to the government.
