Moosarambagh Causeway Demolished After Flood Damage

The decades old causeway at Moosarambagh Bridge over the Musi River has been demolished following severe damage caused by recent heavy rains and flooding. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) took this step to ensure public safety, as the structure had developed significant cracks and exposed iron rods, posing risks to commuters.

Flood Induced Damage

The causeway, a vital link for residents of Amberpet, Dilsukhnagar and Malakpet, was heavily damaged during the recent floods. The release of surplus water from Himayat Sagar and Osman Sagar reservoirs led to the Musi River swelling, submerging low lying areas and causing significant structural damage to the causeway. The GHMC engineering department conducted a detailed study and concluded that the causeway was unsafe for use. Consequently, traffic was diverted, and the demolition was initiated to prevent any accidents.

Ongoing Construction of High Level Bridge

In response to recurring flooding issues, the GHMC had already commenced the construction of a new high level bridge at Moosarambagh. The project, estimated at ₹52 crore, aims to provide a six lane bridge with 3.5 meter sidewalks on each side. However, the construction has faced delays, and the demolition of the old causeway has further impacted traffic flow.

Traffic Diversions and Public Inconvenience

With the causeway demolished, commuters are now facing detours of 4 to 5 kilometers. Vehicles heading towards Amberpet are being redirected via the Golnaka Bridge. Pedestrians have also expressed concerns over the inconvenience caused by the demolition and have urged authorities to expedite the completion of the new bridge.

Future Plans

The GHMC is actively working on the construction of the new high level bridge, with plans to complete the project at the earliest to alleviate traffic woes. Officials have assured the public that measures are being taken to ensure the safety and efficiency of the new structure.
