Hyderabad: Former Indian cricket captain Mohammad Azharuddin was inducted into the Telangana cabinet on October 31, 2025, and on November 4, the state government officially allocated to him two important portfolios: Minorities Welfare and Public Enterprises.
The swearing-in ceremony took place at Raj Bhavan in Hyderabad, where Governor Jishnu Dev Varma administered the oath of office and secrecy to Azharuddin. With his induction, the cabinet’s strength rose to sixteen ministers out of the permissible maximum of eighteen.
Portfolios Allotted
- The Minorities Welfare department was earlier handled by Adluri Laxman Kumar.
- The Public Enterprises department had been under the direct control of Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy until this allocation.
Significance and Political Context
Azharuddin’s appointment is being viewed as a strategic move by the Congress government ahead of the upcoming Jubilee Hills by-poll, scheduled for November 11, 2025. The constituency, which has over one lakh Muslim voters, is politically significant.
With this induction, Azharuddin becomes the first Muslim minister in the Revanth Reddy led Telangana cabinet, marking a symbolic inclusion of minority representation in governance.
Background
- Azharuddin, aged 62, had contested the Jubilee Hills Assembly seat in 2023 but was unsuccessful.
- In August 2025, he was nominated to the Legislative Council (MLC) under the Governor’s quota, though the formal approval was pending at the time of his swearing-in.
Departments Under His Charge
Under the Minorities Welfare portfolio, Azharuddin will oversee key programmes for the upliftment of minority communities in Telangana including Educational schemes, Scholarships and Welfare projects.
The Public Enterprises department focuses on the management and reform of state run corporations, promoting entrepreneurship and job creation through public sector initiatives. His dual charge is seen as a move to strengthen his administrative profile within the cabinet.
Why Two Portfolios?
Political analysts interpret the dual assignment as a sign of Chief Minister Revanth Reddy’s confidence in Azharuddin’s leadership, while also aiming to enhance minority representation in the government. Initially, speculation suggested that Azharuddin might be considered for the Home Ministry, but he was instead given these two significant portfolios that align with his public image and administrative focus.
Challenges Ahead
Azharuddin takes charge at a crucial political moment. The Jubilee Hills by-poll will test both his popularity and the Congress’s outreach to minority communities. His performance in the two departments will likely shape not only his political standing but also the broader narrative of inclusion and governance efficiency in Telangana’s administration.
