Maharashtra Municipal Elections on December 2

The Maharashtra State Election Commission has officially announced that the first phase of the state’s municipal elections will be held on December 2, 2025, with counting scheduled for December 3, 2025. This marks the first major round of civic polls in the state after a five year delay.

This phase includes elections for 246 Municipal Councils (Nagar Parishads) and 42 Nagar Panchayats  covering a total of 288 local bodies across Maharashtra. More than 1.7 crore voters are eligible to participate in this phase which will elect 6,859 members and 288 council chairpersons.

The nomination period will open on November 10 and close on November 17. Additional phases for bigger urban bodies such as municipal corporations and rural bodies like Zilla Parishads and Panchayat Samitis will be notified separately.

AIMIM’s Stand for Maharashtra Elections

The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) has confirmed that it will Contest the Maharashtra local body Elections and field candidates across multiple districts. The party has emphasized that it aims to represent Diverse Communities and strengthen its grassroots presence.

On Alliances

AIMIM leaders have stated that the party will Decide on Alliances at the local level based on ground conditions in each municipal area. While AIMIM has not announced any formal statewide alliance it has kept the option open for local seat based adjustments if beneficial. Party insiders say the focus remains on expanding AIMIM’s independent footprint, though strategic tie-ups may be considered in select councils.

The Supreme Court has directed that the Maharashtra local body polls must be completed before January 31, 2026. In certain seats where reservation percentages exceed 50% the results may remain subject to legal review  adding a layer of complexity to the conduct of the polls.

What’s Next?

With polling just weeks away political parties including AIMIM are finalising candidates and intensifying their campaigns. The December 2 elections are expected to set the tone for the next phases including the much awaited municipal corporation polls in major cities.
