Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated India’s largest cruise terminal, the Mumbai International Cruise Terminal (MICT), at Indira Dock today. The facility marks a major step in boosting India’s maritime tourism and positioning Mumbai as a global cruise hub.
The new terminal is designed to handle over 1 million passengers annually, with state of the art facilities spread across 2.5 lakh square feet. It can simultaneously host five cruise ships, making it one of Asia’s most advanced cruise terminals.
World class facilities
The terminal has been equipped with:
- 72 immigration counters for smooth passenger movement
- Spacious lounges, waiting areas, and modern amenities
- A dedicated customs and baggage handling system
- Direct connectivity to Mumbai city and tourist destinations
Officials noted that the project is part of India’s larger Sagarmala initiative, which aims to modernize ports and improve coastal infrastructure.
Boost for tourism and economy
Speaking at the inauguration, PM Modi said the terminal will “open new horizons for India’s blue economy, create thousands of jobs, and attract global cruise tourism.” He also highlighted that the facility would encourage domestic cruise operators to expand services along India’s western and eastern coasts.
The cruise terminal is expected to serve as a gateway for international tourists while providing new opportunities for Indian travelers interested in luxury cruise holidays.
Future prospects
With the inauguration of MICT, India aims to significantly increase cruise traffic, which is currently less than 2 lakh passengers annually. Authorities expect this number to multiply fivefold in the coming years as cruise tourism gains popularity.
Officials also revealed that discussions are underway to develop more cruise terminals along India’s coastline to strengthen connectivity and create an integrated cruise tourism circuit.
