AIMIM MP Imtiaz Jaleel addressed a press conference in Mumbra on Saturday to defend party corporator Sahar Shaikh over her controversial “Green Mumbra” remark, which has triggered a political row in Maharashtra.
Jaleel said Sahar Shaikh’s statement was being deliberately misinterpreted for political purposes. He clarified that her comment referred only to the political growth of AIMIM and not to any communal meaning. He accused rival parties of targeting her unfairly and questioned why similar statements made by leaders from other parties often go unchallenged.
“Her words were about strengthening the party’s presence, not about spreading any religious message,” Jaleel said, adding that selective outrage was creating unnecessary controversy.
Sahar Shaikh, who was present at the press meet, reiterated that she respects the Constitution and the law. She said her reference to “Green” was connected only to AIMIM’s party flag and organisational expansion. She maintained that she had no intention of hurting sentiments and had already clarified her position to the police.
The controversy began after Sahar Shaikh made the remark during her election victory speech, stating that she would “Turn Mumbra Green.” The comment drew sharp criticism from opposition leaders, who alleged that it carried communal overtones. Following the backlash, police issued a notice seeking an explanation.
Jaleel criticised what he described as double standards in political discourse and said AIMIM would continue its political work in Maharashtra without fear or pressure. He added that the party’s focus would remain on development and public issues.
The incident has sparked wide political reactions across the state, with leaders from different parties weighing in on the matter. While opposition groups have demanded strict action, AIMIM maintains that the remark has been taken out of context.
