HYDRAA Launches Canal Restoration Drive in Errakunta, Hayathnagar Mandal

In a significant step toward improving water management and flood prevention, the Hyderabad Rural Area and Agriculture Authority (HYDRAA) has launched a canal restoration drive in Errakunta, located in Hayathnagar mandal.

As part of the initiative, officials successfully removed a 10 metre rock formation that had been blocking the natural flow of water between the Errakunta tank sluice and the adjoining canal. This obstruction had long disrupted the movement of excess water, leading to frequent flooding in nearby low lying areas during heavy rains.

According to HYDRAA engineers, the removal of the rock barrier is expected to restore smooth water flow, significantly reduce urban flooding, and enhance groundwater recharge in surrounding residential and agricultural zones.

“The obstruction was a major bottleneck for water movement. Clearing it will help maintain proper drainage and improve water retention in the tank,” said a senior HYDRAA official.

The restoration drive is part of HYDRAA’s broader mission to revive traditional water channels, strengthen stormwater infrastructure, and protect local water bodies from encroachments and blockages.

Local residents welcomed the move, noting that water stagnation and overflow had caused severe damage to nearby roads and farmland in recent monsoons. With the canal now restored, authorities expect improved rainwater harvesting and better flood resilience in the area.

HYDRAA plans to extend similar restoration activities to other parts of Hayathnagar and adjoining mandals as part of its ongoing efforts to sustain urban water ecosystems and mitigate flood risks across the Greater Hyderabad region.
