Hyderabad Traffic Police to Seize Vehicles with Over 10 Pending Challans

In a stern move to enforce traffic discipline and ensure road safety, the Hyderabad Traffic Police have announced a crackdown on vehicles that have accumulated more than 10 pending challans. Offenders risk having their vehicles seized on the spot until dues are cleared.

Strict Enforcement Drive Begins

  • According to officials, the special enforcement drive began this week across all major traffic zones in Hyderabad, including Jubilee Hills, Banjara Hills, Mehdipatnam, Begumpet, Charminar and LB Nagar.
  • Teams have been instructed to scan registration numbers using hand held devices linked to the Integrated e-Challan System, identifying habitual violators instantly.
  • “Vehicle owners who repeatedly ignore challans are showing disregard for the law and public safety. Such vehicles will now be detained until penalties are cleared,”
said Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) A.V. Ranganath, while addressing the media.

Huge Backlog of Unpaid Fines

  • Authorities revealed that thousands of vehicles in the city have pending e-challans, with many owners ignoring repeated reminders. Some two wheeler and car owners reportedly have over 50 unpaid challans for violations such as signal jumping, wrong parking, riding without helmets, and using mobile phones while driving.

The Traffic Police clarified that offenders can check and clear their challans through the Hyderabad Traffic Police website or TS e-Challan portal before enforcement teams arrive.

What Happens if a Vehicle Is Seized?

  • Vehicles found with 10 or more unpaid challans will be towed to the nearest police station.
  • The owner must pay all dues before the vehicle is released.
  • Repeated offenders could face license suspension under Section 206 of the Motor Vehicles Act.

Citizens Response

While many welcomed the move as necessary to curb reckless driving, some motorists urged authorities to simplify the challan payment process.

“Many people aren’t aware of their pending fines until it’s too late. Public awareness and reminders should also be increased,” said Ravi Kumar, a commuter from Mehdipatnam.

Advisory to Vehicle Owners

  • Hyderabad Traffic Police have appealed to citizens to check for pending e-challans regularly and pay dues online to avoid penalties and vehicle seizure.
  • The department has also urged the public to follow basic traffic safety rules wearing helmets, obeying signals and avoiding mobile phone use while driving.
