Hyderabad: Amid an increase in complaints from residents about harassment and forced money collection, Hyderabad City Police Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar issued a stern warning to certain segments of the transgender community on Friday, saying strict action will be taken against anyone found involved in extortion or related illegal activities.
Addressing a gathering of around 250 transgender individuals at a community meeting held at the Centre for Economic and Social Studies in Ameerpet, Sajjanar said police have received multiple grievances from the public about groups reportedly visiting homes during auspicious occasions and demanding large sums of money. He described such forced collections and harassment as unacceptable and a violation of law and order.
“Forced collections and harassment of citizens are unacceptable. Anyone taking the law into their own hands will face jail,” the commissioner warned, emphasizing that the police would take strict legal action against anyone found guilty of such conduct, regardless of their background. Sajjanar also expressed concern about internal disputes within sections of the community, noting that clashes over dominance in certain areas have contributed to law and order problems, including incidents that resulted in fatalities.
Despite the tough stance on alleged violations, he reassured attendees that the police support members of the community who seek to live with dignity and abide by the law.
Supporting Services and Outreach
Officials at the meeting encouraged transgender persons to use existing support structures. Additional Director General of Police (Women Safety Wing) Charu Sinha urged members to make use of Pride Place, a support platform under the women’s safety wing designed to help address grievances and promote social integration.
Employment and Welfare Initiatives
Telangana’s transgender welfare officials also highlighted ongoing efforts to help community members access employment opportunities and government welfare schemes. Rajender, the Additional Director of Transgender Welfare said Telangana has an estimated 50,000 transgender residents and encouraged them to obtain official identity cards to benefit from reservations and other support programs. These initiatives aim to improve economic inclusion and dignity for transgender individuals in the state.
